Wheat is grown, as well as vines, fruit, sugar cane, barley (farmed land : 6%). Australia also produces its own wine.

The agricultural production cannot be diversified as the climatic conditions are not favorable for other crops.

Agriculture is highly mechanized, 5.6% of the total working population are in agriculture, and this sector contributes 4% to the Gross National Product. In France 35% of the territory is farmed compared to 6% in Australia.

The agricultural economic balance is in surplus, 9.4 billion dollars in 1994, that represents 3% of the GPP. It is the 4th largest agricultural surplus in the world.
