15 - WORKING IN THE COUNTRY

To work and travel in Australia, it is indispensable to speak perfect English.

Depending on the period and on the regions, the conditions of the labour market are different, and a positive answer to an immigration demand does not automatically guarantee an employment.

It is recommended that the candidate gets infomation on the state of the labour market in his own sector of activity before going through all the steps to get permission to immigrate...

If you already have a temporary resident's permit consult the DIEA (the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs) and pay a tax of 200A$. Your employer will deal with the necessary administrative steps and your enrolment in the different departments (income tax ,...)

With a tourist visa you can start to prospect in the country and approach local companies.But it is necessary to change your status and return to your departure point, the Paris Embassy. In France you then make a demand for temporary residence to be able to continue and finalize your job prospecting, but do not forget that the Australians have priority on available jobs proposed by employment agencies. The employer has to prove that you are indispensable and that the on-going offer is available to the public in the employment agencies and the press and has not been filled. The procedure can take a while before the official agreement is obtained. Be patient.

WORKING IN AUSTRALIA

The job market

• With an unemployment rate of 12% and over, Australia is deeply affected by the economic recession. 650 000 small and medium size companies and industries represent the economic and industrial activity in the country. They usually have less than 100 employees.
• The privileged sectors are tourism, the hotel industry, service industries and the industrial sectors.

There are two possible approaches

• Either you go and work for a French company or its subsidiary,
• Or your go and work in Australia, as an immigrant, for a local company.

In the first case, depending on the length of your contract, you are going as part of a French company and are subject to French law, also this possibility leaves your options open to prepare an eventual future immigration.

You can find the list of French companies established in Australia at the CFCE in Paris, or at the international Chamber of Commerce. A certain number of documentation centres can also help you to gather information (Embassy, consulate, the Franco-Australian Chamber of Commerce..)

In the second case you have to wait for a visa, and more particularly for a job, as finding a job in an Australian company 20 000 kms away is not easy.
Unsollicited applications have very little chance of ending up in an appointment, unless you are on the spot.

France and Australia have no convention concerning on-the-job training which makes it even more difficult to find an training opportunity or a summer job.

Another way to go indirectly to Australia

Certain expatriates who have managed to immigrate to Australia have gone to work first for an Australian export company (for instance in the Middle East) and then at the end of their contract or at the end of the projet,due to their professional competence, they have been able to negociate a contract in Australia with the same company.

15 - TRAVAILLEZ DANS LE PAYS

Pour travailler et voyager en Australie, la maîtrise parfaite de la langue anglaise est indispensable.

Selon la période et selon les régions les conditions du marché du travail sont différentes, et une réponse favorable à une demande d’immigration n’entraîne pas automatiquement la garantie de trouver un emploi.

Il est recommandé au candidat de se renseigner sur l’état du marché du travail dans son secteur d’activité, avant d’entreprendre toutes les démarches pour obtenir l’autorisation d’immigrer...

Vous disposez déjà d’un visa de résident temporaire, consultez le DIEA (Département de l'Immigration et des Affaires Ethniques) et acquittez une taxe de 200 AU $. Votre employeur prend en charge les démarches administratives et les inscriptions aux différents départements (Impots,...)

Avec un visa tourisme on peut commencer à prospecter localement, à faire du démarchage auprès des entreprises locales, mais il faudra changer de statut sans oublier de repasser par votre point de départ, l'ambassade à Paris. En France faites une demande de résidence temporaire, pour vous permettre de concrétiser vos recherches, mais sans oublier que les Australiens sont prioritaires en ce qui concerne les emplois disponibles, proposés par les bureaux de l’emploi. L'employeur devra démontrer que vous pouvez être indispensable et que l’offre en instance dans l’agence de l’emploi et dans les journaux est restée disponible au public et n’a pu être pourvue. Les procédures peuvent demander un certain temps avant d’obtenir l’agréement officiel. Soyez patient.

TRAVAILLER EN AUSTRALIE

Le marché du travail.

Dans le premier cas, selon la durée de votre contrat, vous partez en qualité de détaché d’une entreprise française, et restez soumis à la législation française, de plus cette possibilité vous laisse la porte ouverte sur place pour préparer votre future immigration.

Vous trouverez la liste des entreprises françaises implantées en Australie auprès du CFCE à Paris, ou à la chambre de commerce internationaleUn certain nombre de centres de documentation peuvent vous aider dans la collecte des informations (Ambassade, Consulat, Chambre de Commerce Franco-Australienne,...).

Dans le deuxième cas, vous restez dans l’attente d’un visa, et surtout d’un emploi, car la recherche d’une situation dans une entreprise autralienne à 20.000 km, n’est pas facile.
Les candidatures spontanées ont peu de chance de voir un rendez-vous aboutir, sauf si vous êtes sur place.

La France et l’Australie n’ont pas signé de convention de stage, et c’est là aussi une situation difficile que la recherche d’un stage ou un job d’été.

Certains expatriés qui ont immigré en Australie, ont su d’abord partir travailler pour une entreprise autralienne exportatrice (par exemple vers le Moyen Orient), puis à la fin de leur contrat ou du projet, ont pu grâce à leurs compétences professionnelles, négocier avec cette même entreprise un contrat en Australie.
