Ontario
With
Ottawa as the capital of
Canada,
and Toronto such an important economic centre,
Ontario is a province turned to the US market. It
has great natural resources.
It has one of the highest populations in Canada
with nearly 11 million inhabitants, 4.7 million of
which are
in Toronto. The Toronto Stock Exchange is famous
for its transactions which make up nearly 80% of
all the transactions done in Canada. In fact it is
second only to the New York Stock Exchange.
The headquarters of most of the banks are
established in this province.
Ontario's mining exploitation is the biggest in
Canada, 29%. The main production is gold, cobalt,
zinc, iron, silver and platinum.
The food industry is a properous sector, it
represents 47% of the Canadian production.
Transport should not be overlooked either,
representing three quarters of the Canadian
production. Motor vehicle production, 95% of the
total production of the country, is the dominant
sector in Ontario, turning out 2.2 million
automobiles. More than 6 billion dollars has been
invested at short term in this industry.
The United States has found a first rate competitor
as Canada outstrips them in costs.
Aerospace, aeronautics and rail transport are also
very present. A prosperous production in the
aerospace sector puts the country in 8th position
in the world ratings, and it is still growing, +10%
in 1995.
A rise of 15% was estimated for 1996.
Certain sectors of activity like
telecommunications, computer sciences, medicine and
pharmaceutical products are dominant in Ontario's
industry. They represent 50% of the employment
created
in the province. The production goes up by 20%
every year.
Ontario is in fact one of the biggest suppliers of
computer science to North America.
Plastic production, 60% of which comes from
Ontario, has gone up a lot. The production is
mainly destined for export (93%). The work force in
this sector is one of the most competitive cost
wise.
Ontario's production of chemical products
represents more than half of the country's
production,
that is 13 billion dollars each year. It is
destined for export, 90% for the USA.
Commercial exchanges, in spite of a flourishing
economy, are crushed by American trade
(90% exports and 75% imports). Trade with Asia is
also important, in fact Asia remains the biggest
trading partner. Exports represent 116 billion
$Can.(230 million for France) and imports 130
billion $Can.
(764 million from France). The French are very
present in Ontario with 108 companies.
