There is a wide
range of choice in accomodation in Chile, youth
hostels, boarding houses (casas de familia), and
hotels (which themselves go from shabby to five
star).
There are also
several campings, where equipment is often
provided.
You can also
lodge with a local person, the rooms are usually
clean and the welcome friendly.
Local
specialities :
Cazuela (chicken stew, rice, maize, potatoes),
empanadas (fritters containing meat, onions, a hard
boiled egg and olives or cheese) alpaga steak
(Altiplano), mutton, fish and seafood on the coast,
try the picarocos, jaiva (crab) and locos.
Local wine, pisco (eau-de-vie), chicha (fermented
maize).
Chile is famous for its churrasco sandwich served
with mashed avocados, its chacarero (steak and
green beans ), or the completo (sausage with
tomatoes, avocado and mayonnaise).

Valparaiso
:
Coco Loco : it is the most traditional restaurant
in Valparaiso and has also the most spectacular
view over the bay. It serves all the specialities,
meat, fish and seafood.
Blanco 1782 on the 21st and 22nd floors.
Domino : a modest little tavern which is very well
known and is one of the best restaurants for
chorrillana. Subida Cumming, near the Plaza Anibal
Pinto.
Casino Social Jota Cruz, next to the Plaza Vicotia,
a real restaurant museum overflowing with old
objects.
A good simple cuisine with local specialities.
