Hotels and Restaurants

There is a wide range of choice in accomodation in Chile, youth hostels, boarding houses (casas de familia), and hotels (which themselves go from shabby to five star).

There are also several campings, where equipment is often provided.

You can also lodge with a local person, the rooms are usually clean and the welcome friendly.

Local specialities :

Cazuela (chicken stew, rice, maize, potatoes), empanadas (fritters containing meat, onions, a hard boiled egg and olives or cheese) alpaga steak (Altiplano), mutton, fish and seafood on the coast, try the picarocos, jaiva (crab) and locos.
Local wine, pisco (eau-de-vie), chicha (fermented maize).
Chile is famous for its churrasco sandwich served with mashed avocados, its chacarero (steak and green beans ), or the completo (sausage with tomatoes, avocado and mayonnaise).
