Roads
There are 934,000 kms of roads in Russia,
445,000 kms of which are reserved for industries or
farms.
Only 725,000 kms are tarmacked. The distances are
enormous and the roads are in bad condition.
Driving is on the right, the speed limit is 60 kph
in built up areas and 90 kph on other roads. It is
obligatory to wear a seat belt and children must
travel in the back of the car.
The roads are very dangerous - there is very little
driving discipline and Russians 'drink and
drive'.
Foreigners are often stopped for 'infractions',
fines are negotiable in dollars.
Public transport
Public transport is cheap and quite efficient :
there are buses, trams and undergrounds. The
underground is open from 5.30 in the morning till 1
am. Watch out : the signs in the metro are in
Cyrillic and any plans that you are lucky enough to
find are often out of date.
Waterways
Internal waterways totalize 101,000 kms, 95,900
of them offer navigational guides at the service of
the Russian River Flotilla, 60,400 kms guarantee an
aid to night navigation and 16,9000 kms are
artificial waterways.
