|
Paris
- Johannesburg 11 hours of flight
There are daily flights with Air France
(tel 0802 802 802) and by South African
Airways (tel 01 49 27 05 50).
Internal
Transport :
By air :
There are flights going to all the
domestic airports from Johannesburg with
SAA and other private airlines to Durban,
Cape Town, Sun City, the Kalahari, the
Transvaal, etc. There are also charter
flights.
There are airport buses going into the
towns and taxis. You can also rent a car
at the airport.
By
rail :
All the main towns in the country are
connected by Spoornet and you could also
travel by the Blue Train (16 wagons,
suites with bathrooms, gastronomy à
la carte and champagne to welcome you on
board!), which goes from Pretoria to Cape
Town via Johannesburg and Kimberley. (tel
27 11 774 44 69)
Road
:
The road network is very good and all
the main towns are connected with the
smaller ones. You drive on the left and it
is obligatory to wear a seat belt. The
speed limit is 60 kms per hour in town,
120 on the highways and 100 on other main
roads. Not observing the speed limit is
severely penalized. You will need your
international driving licence.
The
ports:
The port management is at the centre of
the preoccupations of the transport
ministry. The seven South African ports
will have to be expanded to improve their
capacity and their reliability in order to
develope their reputation in southern
Africa. The three biggest ports are
congested. Durban, Cape Town and Richards
Bay get 5,600, 3,000 and 1,300 ships
respectively, touching in each year.
Privatization has become an objective
which should permit the infrastructures
and the activity to develope.
|
19
- Time differences
|
South Africa is two hours ahead of GMT all
the year round.
In summer Johannesburg is therefore at the
same time as Paris, and in winter is one
hour ahead.
|
20
- Telecommunications and the
press
|
Communication
services are very efficient. South Africa
has no satellite connections but it is
still possible to phone easily all over
the world.
For internal calls there is a system of
telecard for the green telephone booths.
You can buy these cards in post offices,
at the airport and in the CNA agencies.
The cards are sold by 10 rand
units.
You
can rent a mobile phone by the day, the
week or by the month.
To
phone South Africa from France : Dial 00
27 + the town code + the n°
The main town codes : Pretoria 12,
Johannesburg 11, Durban 31, Port Elizabeth
41, Cape Town 21
To phone France from SA : Dial 00 33 + the
n°
Radio/Television
:
You can pick up Radio France every day in
South Africa.
On the other hand there are hardly ever
any television shows in French shown on
local television. There are 4 TV channels
in English or Afrikaans, the system is
PAL.

- Hotels & restaurants
|
It
is possible to take a bed and breakfast,
or a guesthouse or spend a holiday on a
farm.
There are several youth hostels or you can
camp or caravan. There are bungalows,
motels and holiday residences at the beach
resorts.
In the big towns there are all categories
of hotels up to 5 stars.
Johannesburg : all the international
chains have at least one hotel in
Johannesburg. It is better for security
reasons nowadays to reside in Sandton or
Rosebank (most of the offices are there
now also).
Restaurants : The Butcher Shop & Grow
in Sandton Square : the must for meat
eaters
The Montego Bay in Sandton Square : the
must for sea food.
Durban
: the sea front is paved with top class
hotels and restaurants

Addresses'

- Your suitcase
|
For
the summer months take light clothing with
a sweater or jacket for the evening and
the air conditioning and sandshoes for
walking. Safari clothes if you are going
to the parks. Warmer clothes for the
winter months. South Africans are smart
but relaxed in the towns.
For business meetings you need a suit and
tie and a jacket for
restaurants.
Don't
take valuable jewelry with you and don't
wear jewelry or a good watch in the centre
of town (particularly in
Johannesburg).

25
- Information
|
Customs
:
There is a customs office in all the
ports and airports - about 200 in all. You
can get the duty rates from the South
African embassy. The average length of
time it takes to get your goods through
customs when they have been shipped by sea
is 3 days, when they have come by air it
takes 2 days.
Customs clearance and taxes are
obligatory, and the good will be checked.
Duties and taxes have to be paid
immediately. Bulk grouping is accepted.
The average cost of clearing is 1.5%.
There are no tax free zones.
VAT :
VAT is 15% on all goods and
services.
Foreign tourists can get reimbursed their
VAT in the customs office at the airport
before leaving the country on certain
items which have cost over 250 rand. To
get reimbursed you have to have your
identity papers, the bill for the article,
a customs form and be able to show the
article.
Opening
hours :
During the week shops and offices close
fairly early, about 5pm in the centre and
shops are even often closed on Saturday
afternoons. The boutiques in the shopping
malls however stay open later and are
often open on Sunday mornings.

- Banks
|
There
are several banks and most of them have
exchange bureaus : Allied, First National,
NedBank, Standard, Trust, United and
Volkskas.
The banking service is efficient, there
are automatic distributors nearly all over
the country which are open 24 hours a day
.
The banks are open from 9am to 3.30pm from
Mondays to Fridays and from 8.30am to 11am
on Saturdays.
Most of the international credit cards are
accepted (at least in the big
towns).
For
French investors there is the 'Caisse
Française de Développement'
and its private subsidiary PROPARCO
(promotion and participation in economic
cooperation). This organization can
intervene with its own capital as a
partner in a French enterprise.
The Centre Français du Commerce
Extérieur (CFCE) can also help in
foreign investment.
French
banks are well represented in the country.

in kindergarten, followed by primary,
secondary and upper.
English and German are taught.

Shopping
:
Shops are open from 8am to 5pm from
Monday to Friday and from 8am to 1pm on
Saturdays.
In the big towns several of the shops,
particularly in the shopping malls, are
open on Sundays.
South Africa is known for the high quality
of its products.
Credit cards are accepted in all the big
shops, but less so in the small towns and
in the countryside.
Be careful when buying petrol : you can
only pay with a special garage card, or
eventually with cash or travellers
cheques.
To buy theatre, show or bus tickets you
can use the reservation service
Computicket, which has 300 agencies and

TOURISM
South
Africa, with its perfect weather and
breath-taking landscapes, is one of the
most beautiful countries to spend a
holiday in.
The Transvaal
It is the most northern province in
South Africa.
It is mostly made up of lowlands. The
climate is sub-tropical. Most of the game
parks which are famous throughout the
world are situated in this region (e.g.
the Kruger Park). There is an
extraordinary number of animal species to
be seen there.
In the southern part of the highlands (the
Highveld) is the Witwatersand, a very
industrialized area. The Vaal Dam supplies
the water and at the same time is a
leisure site for nautical sport
lovers.
Two hours away from Johannesburg, you can
find the Pilanesberg national park and go
on the hunt (photographic) for the Big
Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and
leopard).
In the centre of Pilanesberg there is the
Sun City complex with casinos, golf
courses and hotels. The crowning glory of
the Sun City is the Lost City which is a
spectacular kitsch monument with the
Palace Hotel in it.
The
Cape Province
A rocky or sandy coastline, river
rapids, high mountains, a vast semi-desert
area, magnificent flora, this is the
biggest province in South Africa.
In the western part of the Cape where the
climate is mediterranean there are flowers
in spring, fruit in summer, beautiful
colours in autumn and winter is cold. But
in the north-west or the Richtersveld
there are dry regions, empty spaces and
hardly any vegetation.
The
Cape Peninsula
A fantastic natural heritage, the
coast has over a hundred white sandy
beaches. There is a huge variety of
indigenous plants on the peninsula
including lilies, irises and orchids
To see :
- the magnificent beaches at
Clifton
- Muizenberg and its attractions
- the region is rich in bird species
- Fish Hoek beach is very popular for
catamaran fans
- Table Mountain
- a tour of the Cape of Good Hope
- excursions in the vineyards Stellenbosch
and Franschhoek
The Orange Free State
It is in the Highveld of the central
plateau with borders at the Transvaal,
Natal, Lesotho and the Cape Province.
It is made up of huge spaces and prairie
land which stretch as far as the eye can
see.
Natal
Natal is a untamed country with
immense beaches and dense living areas.
Its the traditional territory of the Zulu
(Zululand or Kwa-Zulu). Visit the
Drakensberg mountains which peak at 3,500
meters.
The Royal Natal and the Giant's Castle are
the two biggest reserves in the Kwa-Zulu
Natal, you can lodge in the bush and
discover the San (Bushmen) cave
paintings.
The Rothman's July which is the biggest
horse race derby in South Africa, is held
the first Saturday of July in Durban.
The area south of Durban has been
christened the Golf Coast. Durban is a
holidaymaker's paradise. There are lots of
different activities possible, going from
golf to horse racing via hiking and of
course all the water sports : diving,
surfing, sailing, canoing and rafting.
The Valley of a Thousand Hills is a
beautiful region to visit, not far from
Durban.
Shopping
:
Hunting trophies, ostrich eggs and
feathers, precious stones, gold bars, Zulu
handicraft...
Gastronomy
:
- Gazelle or crocodile steak
- an ostrich egg omelette
- fish and sea food
Traditional cooking is a mixture of Dutch
cooking and Malaysian and Indian
flavours.
The Malays of the Cape prepare mild curry
dishes like 'bobotie' (minced lamb curry)
and 'bredies' (vegetable stews), the
Indians in Natal have brought into the
country a large variety of curries and
chutneys.
The 'braai' (barbacue) is omnipresent.
Sea food, lobsters and famous Cape wines
(Cabernet Sauvignon, Fleur du Cap,
L'Ormarins, Boschendal, Nederburg...) and
sugar cane wine and 'witblits', the
traditional Afrikaaner eau-de-vie for the
braver ones.
