The capital of Sweden
is Stockholm
which has a population of
1,700,000.
Stockholm is a peaceful town. It is considered to
be one of the world leaders as a dynamic centre of
design. It is placed between the Mälar Lake
and the Baltic Sea. The town was built on 14
islands, within an archipelego of 24,000
islands.
Gamla Stan, which is the oldest part of town is
woven with passages and narrow streets dating from
the Middle Ages. For seven centuries it has curled
around the Royal Palace. The symbol of this Viking
capital is the Town Hall which dates from 1911, it
can be visited with a guide, you shouldn't miss the
room which is gilded with 18,000 stone and glass
mosaics.
The number of pedestrian areas and the amount and
quality of public transport makes the use of a car
unnecessary.
Stockholm is the main industrial centre of the
country, but it is also a university town.
Göteborg
has 750,000 inhabitants and is the second biggest
town in Sweden. As the leading Scandinavian
seaport, Göteborg has a cosmopolitan
atmosphere and has been marked by the passage of
English and Dutch immigrants. Over the last few
years the town has become a major industrial centre
and the cream of Swedish industry is installed
there e.g. SKF and Volvo. Göteborg is a
friendly town full of gardens and parks. The main
avenue, the Avenyn stretches over nearly a
kilometer, lined with trees, it is full of
restaurants and cafes and ends up at the superb
Beaux-Art museum, the theatre and the
library.
