ENTRY
FORMALITIES
All
visitors entering Vietnam must have a visa in
triplicate, and three recent photos (4 cms x 6
cms).
Foreigners must also give the following information
: name and first name, date and place of birth,
nationality, present place of residence, profession
and passport n°, date of arrival in the
country and date of exit.
Vietnamese
citizens visiting their families must give the date
and the n° of their exit permit, or the date,
the reason and the means of transport of their
departure. They also have to give the names and
addresses of the family visited.
The two extra copies of the visa have to be given
to the customs when you enter the country. Students
and workers who are staying more than 6 months will
receive a temporary residents certificate for a
period of 6 to 12 months. Those who wish to stay
longer have to apply to the Ministry of
Immigration.
Business
men have to apply via a Vietnamese agency who will
sponsor them, and have to give the following
information :
- Name and first name
- Date and place of birth
- Profession
- Passport n°
- Delivery date and expiry date
- Nationality (both original and present)
- Date and place of entry into Vietnam
The Vietnamese agency which stands as guarantee
will send these details to the Vietnamese
immigration authorities. Approval can take from 7
to 10 days. The Vietnamese embassy or consulate
will receive confirmation and approval by telex.
You will need 2 to 4 passport photos when you go to
get your visa.
A business visa can be valid for a six month period
and allows multiple entries.
Student
visa : It is the receiving Vietnamese
organization which takes the necessary steps to get
an entry visa from the Vietnamese embassay abroad,
which is the only competent authority to apply to
for a residents permit.
NB
: In principle a tourist visa cannot be extended
within the country. If you stay up to 5 days over
the period accorded by the Vietnamese embassy you
will have to pay a fine when you leave the country,
which depending on the circumstances, varies
between 2 and 10 US$.
If you stay over 5 days from the date that your
visa expires, you can have serious problems when
you leave Vietnam. You can be held by the border
police for several hours (and probably miss your
plane) and you can be banned from returning to
Vietnam.
If
you should lose your passport or have it stolen,
you must make a declaration at the police station
which is the closest to where it happened. Then,
with this declaration, you have to get a new
travelling document from the French Embassy, and
take this to the Central Immigration Dept to get an
exit visa.
Central Immigration Dept, 40A, Hang Bai St. -
Hanoi. Open from Monday to Saturday morning, from
8am to 11am and from 2pm to 4pm.
It takes about 5 days to get an exit visa and costs
30 US$.
CUSTOMS
AND IMMIGRATION
On
your arrival in Vietnam you will have to fill in
the blue and white arrival-departure forms. You
must absolutely keep the blue form in your passport
at all times. Hotels, guesthouses and even private
homes have to make a declaration to the police when
clients spend the night, and for this they need the
blue form.
You
will also have had to fill in yellow and white
customs forms. You have to keep the yellow one
until you leave the country. Don't lose it. You
have to declare to the customs any foreign currency
above $7,000, videos, gold and jewels which are not
for your own personal use. You are allowed to
import duty free goods : up to 200 cigarettes, 2
litres of alcohol as well as perfume and jewels for
your own personal use.
Vietnam
has very strict laws concerning the importation of
anti-government literature, pornography, guns and
explosives. CDs and videos can be confiscated to be
checked, but will be given back to you after a few
days. It is illegal to take antiques out of the
country. When you buy hand made goods, particularly
if they look ancient, get a receipt from the
salesman as well as a certificate showing that the
object can be exported.
