LONDON
- English in Britain, British Council Validated
Courses for Students and Teachers of English
(published by the British Association of State
Colleges in English Language Teaching (BASCELT).
This brochure is an inventory of the cheaper public
schools. There exists about 15 in London,
amalgamated in an association, all of which propose
to prepare students for exams set by Cambridge or
by London's Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(LCCI).
- Learn English in
Britain with ARELS (Association of Recognized
English Language Services).
This brochure indicates the private institutes
(more expensive) which propose language
courses.
ENGLISH
LESSONS
If you want to study English and if you are
unemployed and if English is not your mother
tongue, you can ask at your Job Centre to follow
their courses English for Speakers of Other
Languages (ESOL), which are totally free and of a
very high standard. If you are not unemployed you
can directly contact the college where the ESOL
courses are given.
FRENCH SCHOOLS
The following establishments follow the French
curriculum and are recognized by the Minister of
National Education.
Teaching methods are identical to those practised
in primary schools, colleges and secondary schools
in France.
Pupils are admitted into the same class during the
school year or into the class above at the end of
the school year without any entrance exams when
they come from an equivalent school in France or
abroad.
SCHOOL
GRANTS
Studies in a local school where the programme
is recognized by the French Ministry of National
Education :
French children at school in kindergarten and
pre-school sections (4 years old), primary and
secondary could get school grants, half-board or
boarding.
Conditions :
- the candidate and his family must be resident
in the country where the school is situated
- the candidate and his family must be registered
with the competent Embassy or Consulate
- the grant demands are first examined by a local
commision based at the Embassy or Consulate (for a
whole or partial grant)
- their propositions concerning the grant are then
submitted to a national Commission for the final
decision (get information from the French
Consulate).
